A health care provider may prescribe a compounded drug if it is determined to be medically appropriate and necessary for you. Compounded semaglutide has not been approved or evaluated for safety, efficacy, or quality by the FDA. Wegovy® is FDA-approved for weight loss, while Ozempic® is FDA-approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, though it may be prescribed off-label for weight loss at a health care provider’s discretion. The effectiveness of GLP-1 medications depends on adherence to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Discontinuation of GLP-1 medications has been associated with weight gain.
